Website Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) refers to a collection of techniques that improve the placement websites receive in search engine results pages.
SEO has become very popular, without surprise. In the past if people needed a product or service, they looked in the yellow pages. Now people turn to the internet to locate and research products and services.
Placement in SERPs
The problem is that search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing produce results pages that contain thousands, sometimes millions, of website hits. And studies show that most people rarely look past the first few pages of results. Consequently, in order to reap the free advertising that search engines can provide, it is important to place well in the results pages. This is what SEO attempts to address.
How does SEO work?
Improving placement in search engine results pages requires two basic categories of activity.
- On-page SEO practices
- This refers to using website development techniques to produce a website that is technically more accessible to search engines. Sometimes referred to as search engine visibility or website optimization, these practices includes things like website file organization and navigation, optimizing <meta> tags, standard use of heading tags, keyword selection, etc.
- Off-page SEO practices
- This refers to tactics designed to increase the perceived popularity of a website. This is achieved through various means including:
- Submitting websites to search indexes and directories.
- Providing content and cross-linking with social media, e.g. LinkedIn, Facebook, etc., and other 3rd party sites.
- Pay-per-click programs as well as traditional off-line advertising activities, for example, newspaper ads, trade shows, etc.
Best results occur when both on-page and off-page activities are applied in combination with each other.
